Now accepting applications for VENDOR ROW, located directly outside the main gate of the CHQ Gran Fondo after party at Webb’s Captain’s Table. This cost to participate is $250, which includes admission to enjoy the featured entertainment on the day of the event.

Join hundreds of cyclists from around the region and members of our Country Proud community on Saturday, August 27 for the Chautauqua Gran Fondo— an exciting, family friendly event that features a bicycle tour around Chautauqua Lake, music and an outdoor picnic at Webb’s Captain’s Table!

Tour Highlight: New Mini-Golf Course at Midway State Park

(BEMUS POINT, NY) — Of the many highlights along the route of the 2016 Chautauqua Gran Fondo, slated for Saturday, August 27, will be the new miniature golf course at Midway State Park on Route 430 in Bemus Point. 

Plans are currently underway for the landscaping and development of the new course’s challenging 18 hole layout which features a nostalgic design inspired by Friend of Midway Peter Sullivan and implemented by Adventure Golf Services– an industry leader in golf course design, based out of Traverse, Michigan.

According to Robert Wooler, President of the Friends of Midway, “The new course will incorporate themes and structures inspired by Chautauqua Lake and local culture, including a tribute to lake fishing, the Bemus Point-Stow Ferry, the Chautauqua Institution Miller Bell Tower, and the Lucille Ball comedy tradition.” 

This upgrade to the park, along with the recent restoration of the Chautauqua Choo-Choo train ride and the 1946 Herschell Carousel will bring Midway State Park back to its former glory. “The overall goal with all of our restoration activities,” continued Wooler, “is to re-create a true atmosphere from the park’s heyday in the 1950s. Miniature golf exploded in popularity in the 1950s, so it will be a thrill to bring back a first-class course for visitors to the park to play.”

When completed for the beginning of the 2016 season, Midway State Park officials see the potential of longer opening hours for the course and a longer season of play.

Q & A with the CEO of Lucid Eyewear

Mark Reininga, a Chautauqua County native and CEO of Lucid Eyewear talks about what inspires him and the importance of giving back.

 

1. What is your organization’s mission? 
Lucid Eyewear was established in 2013 with mission to design, develop and deliver high quality products that help define individuals through lifestyle, culture, music, fashion and desire. The Lucid passion is to positively influence the world by directly giving back with each, and every, product that is sold.

A child dies every minute from Malaria. Each child needs a long lasting insecticidal net (LLIN). Lucid’s mission is to spread the hope of a child’s future with the protective shade of sleeping net. A simple sleeping net is the most effective means of preventing mosquito bites and the Malaria disease.

2. What makes you guys different from the rest?
Most organizations ask for donations from donors and then use it to fund their mission. We are an eyewear company that has our mission built into our model. For every sunglass we sell, we donate a Malaria fighting sleeping net to a child in need. It’s great because people can still give back to others even when they are shopping for themselves. We never thought a pair of sunglasses could have such an impact on someone’s life. Each pair literally has the power to save a childs life.

3. Offices or open workspace? 
We have an open workspace or what you would call a Modern day business. We currently have 4 people in our company and none of us live close to each other. We firmly believe in supporting each others passions which means we live in different areas. If anything, it has strengthened our company because everyone is more motivated and inspired by the environment they currently live in.

5. What inspires you?
Creative expression, giving back and helping others in need, music, action sports, movies, art, people.

6. What is the best part about your job?
The best part about my job is our trips to Mozambique when we give the nets to the children and stay for a week and help out at the orphanage. There is nothing better than seeing those kids faces and the joy in their hearts.

We are constantly striving to do good and inspire others along the way and we want to encourage you to do the same. It’s important that we give back and fight for something that is bigger then ourselves.
